RAFAELLA BRAGA

THE SKY MADE ME A REALITY

March 10-19, 2022

CURATED BY KIARA CRISTINA VENTURA

PRESENTED BY PROCESSA

Processa is honored to present Rafaella Braga’s first NYC solo exhibition, “The Sky Made Me a Reality,” curated by Kiara Cristina Ventura. Viewing the sky as a place to find comfort wherever she is in the world, Braga is meshing the dream and fantasy world with that of reality in her paintings. Braga approaches her painting process like a spiritual ritual —at times lighting candles and making flower offerings in front of her work. She then applies a variety of mediums often using paints mixed with water and a large broom that adds action and performative brush strokes to the canvas. Amoungst the dripping paints and layers of texture lie poems and language that reveal Braga intuition and intention behind each piece. Hence the title of the exhibition “The Sky Made Me a Reality,” Braga is nodding to how the sky serves as an imaginative place to dream and express herself, and thus making her who she is today…a reality.

ABOUT RAFAELLA BRAGA

Rafaella Braga (b.1998, Goiânia, Brasil) began tracing her own path in arts through graffiti and later finding herself in painting, exploring it freely and without any pre-conception. Throughout her life starting from her teenage years, she has painted graffiti works across the globe from her hometown in Goiânia to Brasília, São Paulo, Berlin, and Barcelona. She materializes her ideas mostly on large scale canvases that take up entire walls, revealing a physically intense working method. She breathes new life onto raw canvas and experiments with ways textiles can exist in a space. Using a spectrum mediums such as acrylics, gouache, latex, charcoal, oil sticks, spray painting and fabrics, Braga tells an honest story as these mediums are intertwined with poetic words spilling on the fabric. Braga is also activating her work via installation, performance and sculpture.

Using the canvas as a diary, her practice has the body as primer matter, investigating the self outlined by her vulnerabilities and secrets, and revolves around the interplay between reality and fantasy, identity and time, offering a dreamlike alternative to reality.

Rafaella Braga is currently based in Berlin.
